Brewers Pitcher Calls Out Front Office For Josh Hader Trade

Aug 23, 2022 8:00 AM

The Milwaukee Brewers have struggled in August, watching a two-game lead in the National League Central turn into a five-game deficit over the last three weeks.

Milwaukee is 3-5 in one-run games this month, but left-hander Eric Lauer thinks the clubhouse reaction to the Josh Hader trade has played a part in the skid.

"It didn't send us the right message from the upstairs people trying to say, like, 'We're doing this and we're trying to put you guys in the best position and we're trying to win right now with you guys,'" Lauer said. "It seemed more of a, 'We're trying to develop for the future.'"

The Brewers traded Hader to the San Diego Padres for a handful of players.

"I personally wasn't a huge fan of the way they described it to the public," Lauer added. "I'm not trying to just get a bunch of bites of the apple. Especially if things are going the way they are, the way the Brewers have historically traded [before] paying guys. I don't know how many bites of the apple we can take in the next few years. We're not going to be able to afford a lot of guys in this room."

Mike Elias: Orioles Will 'Significantly Escalate The Payroll'

Aug 15, 2022 7:52 AM

The Baltimore Orioles have emerged as surprise challengers for an American League Wild Card berth and a payroll increase may be on the horizon.

"Our plan for this offseason has always been to significantly escalate the payroll," general manager Mike Elias said. "I think a lot of that's going to come through our own guys going into arbitration, but also we plan to explore free agency much more aggressively. We plan to maybe make some buy trades for some guys that are either on contracts or kind of in the tail-end of their arbitration."

"The success…has only cemented those plans.  I’m really looking forward to the offseason and kind of a winter meetings environment where we're buying.  I think it’s going to be a lot of fun for our group and for the organization."

The Orioles' Opening Day payroll was just $43.8 million, the lowest total for any Major League club's active roster.

Source: Padres Trade Eric Hosmer To Red Sox

Aug 2, 2022 2:44 PM

Hours before the Trade Deadline, Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer invoked his partial no-trade clause to reject his trade to the Nationals as part of the agreed-upon deal that has All-Stars Juan Soto and Josh Bell headed to San Diego, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. But later in the afternoon, Feinsand reported that Hosmer is instead heading to the Red Sox.

Neither San Diego nor Boston has confirmed the deal, and the return is not yet known. Hosmer is owed $39 million from 2023-25.

Aug 2, 2022 12:05 PM

The San Diego Padres have agreed to acquire Juan Soto from the Washington Nationals.

Soto, who is eligible to become a free agent after the 2024 season, turned down a 15-year, $440 million extension offer from the Nationals in mid-July, sources told ESPN, that would have been the largest contract in baseball history.

Soto is hitting .246 this season with 21 home runs.

Washington will acquire the following package from San Diego:

  • LHP MacKenzie Gore
  • OF Robert Hassell III
  • SS C.J. Abrams
  • OF James Wood
  • RHP Jarlin Susana
  • one more major league player
